Digital divide means the difference between those who have
easy access to the web and those who don’t. A digital divide can be seen as a
disadvantage because a lot of information can be found on the web. Social
networks have value social capital refers to the cumulative value of these
networks and how they prompt us to help one another.
As a digital citizen you can get social capital, which are
things like trust, relationship and information. Just like being to a community
in the real world you can derive value from being connected to other people. Social
capitals benefits include enhancing communication skills, digital literacy and
well being just to name a few. Digital divide thus robs you of social capital
and its value decreases. A person who doesn’t
have digital access is cut off from the online community and also loses the opportunity
to gain social skills and communication skills. They also miss out on the
psychological need of belonging and trust with others
